About the Lab
The Dreamspike Lab is dedicated to the study of “dreamspike” phenomena, a relatively rare occurrence where a seizure or epileptiform activity breaks through the inhibitory effect of REM sleep, during which most dreaming occurs. The
primary goal of this lab is to understand the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon and leverage this knowledge to develop better treatments for individuals with epilepsy.
Objectives
Our methods
Our lab employs a variety of innovative techniques to investigate the dreamspike phenomenon and its implications for epilepsy treatment. Here are four key methods we utilize in our research:
electroencephalogram (EEG)
Electroencephalography (EEG) allows us to monitor and record the electrical activity of the brain in real-time. This method is crucial for identifying and analyzing the specific brain wave patterns associated with dreamspikes, providing insights into the underlying neural mechanisms.
hd-tDCS
High-definition transcranial Direct Current Stimulation is a non-invasive technique used to modulate brain activity. By applying targeted electrical currents to specific brain regions, we can study the effects of stimulating or inhibiting neural circuits involved in dreamspike events, helping us explore potential therapeutic interventions.
neuroimaging
We utilize advanced neuroimaging technologies, such as structural MRI and positron emission tomography (PET), to visualize brain activity and structure. These imaging techniques enable us to observe changes in brain function during REM sleep, providing a deeper understanding of the brain’s role in epilepsy.
sleep laboratory experiments
In collaboration with local hospitals, we conduct sleep studies in state-of-the-art sleep labs. These facilities allow us to monitor patients in controlled environments, capturing comprehensive data on sleep patterns, brain activity, and seizure occurrences.
